Doctoral Studentship 2013,Pretoria,The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research

The CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) is a leading scientific and technology research organisation, implementing projects throughout Africa and making a difference in people’s lives.

Purpose

The CSIR: Defence, Peace, Safety and Security (DPSS) unit has an exciting position for a Studentship in the Landwards Sciences competency area. The competency area conducts research on the design and analysis of land systems. The area is divided into various research groups focusing on experimental and computational analysis of short-time-duration events such as detonics; blasting; impact & ballistics (interior, exterior and terminal), the design and development of blast and ballistic protection measures using injury mechanisms criteria (Bio-mechanics) aas well as the test & evaluation of these measures. Within these research groups, a wide variety of research tasks are conducted, including problem analysis through analytical mathematics, experimentation, structural design, modelling and analysis, destructive testing, finite element and hydro-code analysis, as well as dynamics modelling.

Doctoral students may obtain their qualification based on the research work that they are doing at the CSIR. Candidates are engaged full-time on a dissertation-based Doctoral qualification, while simultaneously being employed by the CSIR on a fixed-term contract to work on a research project for the purpose of fulfilling their academic requirements. The studies are fully funded by the CSIR.

The studentship programme allows for the dual mentorship provided by application experts at the CSIR together with a research field expert from an academic institution in the particular field of interest. This approach will allow the students to ensure that his/her research is directed towards a real need while giving him/her the opportunity to still explore the field with scientific rigour.

Key responsibilities:
