Purpose

The CSIR’s Shared Services Finance and Governance: Legal Services has an opportunity for a Senior Legal Advisorto assist the Manager: Legal Services to protect the organisation’s legal interests; maintain its operations within the scope as required by the law, as well as to promote the principles of good corporate governance.

Key responsibilities:

Assist the CSIR’s various Operating Units/Centres in the contracting process (i.e. the negotiating, drafting as well as vetting of various contracts) ensuring that the interests of the CSIR are at all times sufficiently protected from a legal perspective
Provide general legal advice/opinions, including but not limited to litigation by or against the CSIR, and in the process to instruct, brief and liaise with external legal teams
Advise on the interpretation and implementation of applicable new / draft legislation
Assist in the conduct of disciplinary hearings as a disciplinary committee member
Assist with company secretarial work

Qualification

A South African admitted attorney with a B. Proc /LLB degree and at least seven years‘ proven post-admission experience, including experience as a practising attorney
Extensive experience in the negotiating, drafting and vetting of commercial contracts, including licensing agreements, as well as the interpretation of contracts and legislation
Experience in general litigation and labour related matters
Ability to work under pressure
Attention to detail
Good communication (verbal and written), conflict resolution, facilitation and interpersonal skills
High levels of computer literacy
